The August 2023 edition of JP 3-14 (limited distribution, not classified) describes space operations by mission area, aligned with the division of tasks between the commands. According to public summaries, these include:
- Space domain awareness — knowing what is in space and what it appears to intend;
- Offensive and defensive space operations — the successor of space control;
- PNT, ISR and SATCOM;
- missile warning, nuclear detonation detection, spacelift (launching) and satellite operations.
The difference from the classic taxonomy is mainly one of form: the four big bins have been replaced by concrete services, and offensive/defensive operations are now named explicitly.
